  • Sexy or not, here come new SAP mobile apps

    Todd Morrison
    14 May 2012 | 2:58 pm
ORLANDO, Fla. — SAP took the development of its Sybase Unwired Platform (SUP) a step further today by unveiling a handful of new mobile applications at the kickoff of its annual SapphireNow conference. Company officials said the new apps, developed by SAP and its business partners, are designed to help users in several areas, including human resources (HR), finance, sales, mobile commerce and sustainability. More partner apps will be unveiled over the course of the conference from the vendors themselves, according to SAP. It’s all part of the business software giant’s plan…
  • What’s wrong with SAP BusinessObjects support?

    Todd Morrison
    14 May 2012 | 10:12 am
A new survey by the U.K. and Ireland SAP User Group finds some mixed news for SAP.  The adoption rate for SAP BusinessObjects is on the rise - but a third of the entire user base isn’t happy with the technical support it’s getting. In a survey of roughly 100 SAP BusinessObjects customers, nearly a third of all customers said they thought that the technical support provided to them wasn’t as great as what they get from other vendors. When asked what specifically did they have problems with, the biggest complaints were about the quality of SAP’s online support. Roughly…

We’ll no doubt have a clearer idea of where SAP is taking its customers on a range of fronts by the time Van Halen hits the stage at the conclusion of this year’s SapphireNow conference, from what mobile apps are in the offing, and where SAP is going with its cloud strategy, and a range of other issues. But what might we learn about SAP’ business intelligence portfolio, specifically? I recently spoke with Gartner analyst Rita Sallam about some of the questions she’s looking to answer in Orlando. Is SAP’s new predictive analytics application easy to use? In the…

    3 May 2012 | 1:24 pm
Who needs pay-per-view boxing when you can watch two of the world’s largest tech companies hold their own enterprise software version of Fight Club, with millions of dollars in future sales at stake? SAP, which has typically jabbed Oracle not by name but with thinly-veiled references in the past, has decided to go toe-to-toe with Oracle over its claims about the cost and validity of SAP’s HANA in-memory database platform. “Traditionally at SAP, we’ve taken the high road when it comes to responding to these claims, as nearly 100% of what Oracle says is inaccurate and…
  • SAP and the art of dashboarding Zen

    Jacquelyn Howard
    26 Apr 2012 | 1:37 pm
By the end of 2012, SAP plans to deliver Zen, the code name for the new addition to the SAP BusinessObjects Analysis suite that allows users to create HTML5 apps and dashboards. Although Xcelsius (aka SAP BusinessObjects Dashboards), has mobile dashboard functionality, it requires Flash, leaving out iPad users, since the Apple iOS does not support Flash. HTML5 works across a wider variety of mobile devices. In the recent “Most Important Xcelsius Webinar of 2012,” Mico Yuk of Everything Xcelsius noted that 82% of attendees were not familiar with SAP Zen, so here are some key facts:…

    24 Apr 2012 | 2:04 am
(cross posted from my Gartner blog) Andrew McAfee recently posted on the dire state of graduate employment in the US. His work on the impact of technology on employment is well worth a read, I reviewed his book here. Here in little old Germany, the graduate job market is rather different. Unemployment among graduates in Germany one year after leaving their institution is at 4% and below, compared with a seasonally adjusted national unemployment rate of 5.9%, according to a survey by HIS-HF, a higher education statistics agency. So what is Germany doing right? Despite Euro doom and gloom talk,…

This clever and moving video arrived on my facebook wall a few days ago. It is worth taking a moment to watch it. And then this morning a dear friend from South Africa pinged me that he was seeking sponsorship, raising money for the Wildlands Conservation Trust.  David got me into cycling many years ago, introducing me to the joys of the high end bike shop, and the Berkshire and Surrey countryside.  After years of hanging on his back wheel, the least I could do was sponsor him while he rides his mountain bike around Giant’s Castle. If you would like to help, head over to…

I stumbled on this brilliant video today (hat tip to @williamtincup).     This is one of the better examples of linking corporate and employee branding for recruitment I have seen. Low cost Innovative Targeted Measured (note the stats at the end). It cleverly reinforces the corporate and the employee brand.  I wrote a note several years ago now (client link here) where I stressed the need for organizations to get marketing and HR to work more closely together on recruitment branding. This is probably the best example I have seen of a company doing…

    Michael Koch
    2 May 2012 | 6:09 pm
Can we please stop talking about “creative programming”? Many years ago, I had a cartoon pinned up by my office desk. It was a caricature of a pianist-like dressed man, sitting by a PC. Over the course of several sketches he got more and more excited, hitting and bashing the computer keyboard in ecstasy. The final frame showed him throwing back his hair, a satisfied smile on his face. He seemed exhausted, but happy. Alone, yet in awe of his work. Underneath the cartoon it read in German: “Der kreative Programmierer” (the creative programmer). Fast forward to 2012 and this…

At a time when lots of my Mentor colleagues are at SAP’s internal DKOM events, I had the opportunity to attend SAP’s semi-public UK Technology Forum in St Albans on March 21st and spent day 1 there, mainly focussing on information around User Interfaces and Netweaver Gateway. As a regular TechEd visitor, events such as this are not providing you with a raft of new items around SAP products, but instead give you with a gut feel for the local customer and developer community. Some of you might have seen Hugh McLeod’s picture about producing something “amazing”. As it happens, today I had a work discussion that touched on just that. Suffice to say what the obvious business decision was… once again, Quality was Job One. I see this at a lot of SAP sites. The implementation team knows that users are not particularly happy with…

  • OutOfMemory Error due to XSLT Transformations

    Sap Nwnewbie
    11 Mar 2012 | 7:53 am
XI uses caching to speed up XSLT transformations. The mappings structures (transformer objects) that are already generated are stored in a mapping pool for reuse. Whenever a mapping is required, a transformer object is required to execute the mapping. Therefore the mapping pool will store as many transformer objects as the number of messages being mapped. By default the maximum number of transformer objects is set to 20, which means that this limit is reached when 20 messages are being mapped using the same XSLT logic. Storing these transformer objects in heap can degrade performance or cause…

XI/PI stores the XML data into LOB fields in the following tables: SXMSCLUP, SXMSCLUP2, SXMSCLUR, SXMSCLUR2, XI_AF_MSG/BC_MSG. LOB data has always been a source of performance problem when performing transactions on these tables. Oracle 11g has introduced a new way of storing LOB data to improve performance. The LOBs stored with the new approach are called SecureFile LOBs. The traditional LOBs i.e the LOBs before developing SecureFile are called as BasicFile LOBs. You can convert the above mentioned tables from BasicFile LOBs to SecureFile LOBs using BR Tools (7.2) to benefit from the…
