SAP is bringing BI to collaboration, but should it have done the opposite? StreamWork, SAP’s collaborative decision making (CDM) platform, is just that - a way to help teams of users drive projects forward through document sharing, instant messaging, and by using SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analyses within the application to reach decisions collectively. Because it’s integrated with BusinessObjects (BOBJ), users can upload and share copies of spreadsheets, Crystal Reports and Crystal Dashboards to help inform decisions. SAP’s is bringing BI…

Today SAP announced its intention to acquire software and relevant assets from datango AG, provider of workforce performance software that companies can use for ERP training. Datango’s mission is to help “people adopt, use and benefit from the software enterprises invest in to make them more productive.” Datango’s performance suite is currently incorporated into SAP Business ByDesign to assist small and medium businesses with application rollout and education. “The workforce performance tools market has become increasingly strategic and critical to our…

What makes the energy side the biggest area for sustainability right now? As you can probably tell if you heat your home with oil or drive a car, energy is rising in term of cost - there is quite a bit of volatility in pricing. In fact, Bolick estimates that…

This clever and moving video arrived on my facebook wall a few days ago. It is worth taking a moment to watch it. And then this morning a dear friend from South Africa pinged me that he was seeking sponsorship, raising money for the Wildlands Conservation Trust.  David got me into cycling many years ago, introducing me to the joys of the high end bike shop, and the Berkshire and Surrey countryside.  After years of hanging on his back wheel, the least I could do was sponsor him while he rides his mountain bike around Giant’s Castle. Low cost Innovative Targeted Measured (note the stats at the end). This time of the year tends to be a time of excess. The people recognize themselves in their commodities; they find their soul in their automobile, hi-fi set, split-level home, kitchen equipment. This is a quote from Herbert Marcuse, a German philosopher.  I rather like it, but I’ve never really been comfortable with the term “the people.”  After all, the same affliction affects me too. This is a first person issue, other than the kitchen equipment:  I’m with the Hitch, but there is a part of me that really likes stuff. Here is my newly discovered antidote; two…

Put down that Scandinavian crime novel, ignore your travel expense application issues and read this book instead. I’m perhaps reading too much into the title,  but I can’t help wondering if it isn’t a hat tip to the rock band Rage Against the Machine.  If it is, deeply nifty sub-editing coolness.   If not,  it is a lovely  unintended consequence. Tweet I started the day reading this post from TorrentFreak, which lays bare some of the key problems with the current Copyright situation. In the early days of RedMonk we spent a great deal of time writing about the need for copyleft approaches, and more permissive content licensing, as a basis for both business innovation and better user experience. Our position hasn’t changed, but sadly the situation has probably worsened in the last eight years or so. The Digital Economy Act in the UK, and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the US, are both pieces of legislation that skew the balance…

And of course an aggressive sales force that lives and breathes cloud deals. But then a week or so later at SAP’s annual Influencer event something began to nag at me. You see- the SAP cloud story was finally beginning to look pretty solid. The company has adopted agile development, and even some user centric design, to make its products more appealing…

Tweet One of our potential sponsors for the coming Monki Gras conference was interested to know more about our thinking – will this be a one off, or an event series worth investing in for the long haul? The answer is the long haul. This is a chance to get in at ground level for what promises to be an influential event series. Its worth pointing out that the umbrella brand for the community event series is actually RedMonk Brew – but “Monktoberfest” suggested itself so strongly for our inaugural event in Portland, Maine, that we had to run with it. I would like to do it in SE37, but the function would need a COMMIT to be called after execution. I thought it was not possible to do in SE37 but it actually is. When tables grow large, queries on the table will be slow. Index range scans, table scans, backups and restores will be slow. The most common characteristic of such tables is that the older entries in the table are seldom changed and updates happen on the newer entries. By partitioning the table, the older entries can be maintained in a seperate partion, thereby increasing performance--looking up for query results in a smaller set of data, parallel processing in different partitions, faster backups etc. Types of Partitions: Range Partition: This allows you to partition data by…

Locking is a mechanism to control concurrent access to data in order to maintain consistency. Lock requests are made to concurrency-control manager. Transaction can proceed only after the request for lock is approved. Data can be locked in eXclusive mode or Shared mode. When a transaction sets an exclusive mode, it can both read and alter it. Whereas a shared mode will only let the transaction to read the data. A transaction may be granted a lock on an item if the requested lock is compatible (see the compatibility matrix) with locks already held on the item by other transactions.
